This Spicy Margarita is the perfect cocktail for those who love a bold kick of heat with the classic flavors of a margarita. It’s refreshing, zesty, and fiery, thanks to fresh jalapeño peppers. Ideal for parties, taco nights, or relaxing on a warm evening, this cocktail strikes the perfect balance between tangy lime, sweet agave, and spicy jalapeños. Customize the heat level to suit your preference and enjoy a vibrant, flavorful drink.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 oz silver tequila (or mezcal for a smoky variation)
- 1 oz freshly squeezed lime juice (about 1 lime)
- 1 oz Cointreau or triple sec (orange liqueur)
- ½ oz agave syrup (adjust to taste)
- 1 fresh jalapeño, sliced (remove seeds for less heat)
- Tajin seasoning or coarse salt, for rimming the glass
- Ice cubes, for serving
- Lime wedge, for garnish
- Optional: Dash of orange juice or fruit puree for added sweetness
Instructions
- Prepare the Rim: Run a lime wedge around the rim of your glass and dip it into Tajin seasoning or coarse salt to coat the rim. Set aside.
- Muddle the Jalapeños: In a cocktail shaker, add 2-4 slices of fresh jalapeño, depending on how spicy you like it. Muddle gently with a muddler or the back of a spoon to release the flavors and heat.
- Add Liquids: Pour in the silver tequila, lime juice, Cointreau, and agave syrup into the shaker. If you prefer a sweeter drink, add a dash of orange juice or fruit puree like mango or pineapple.
- Shake: Fill the shaker with ice cubes and shake vigorously for 20-30 seconds to mix and chill the drink.
- Strain: Strain the mixture into your prepared glass filled with ice.
- Garnish and Serve: Garnish with a lime wedge and an extra slice of jalapeño for a visual flair. Serve immediately and enjoy!
Notes
- Adjusting the Spice: For a milder version, remove the seeds and ribs from the jalapeño before muddling, or use fewer slices. For an extra kick, leave the seeds in or use spicier peppers like serrano or habanero.
- Fruit Variations: Add a fruity twist by muddling in fresh fruits like strawberries, blackberries, or mangoes. These will add sweetness to balance the heat of the jalapeño.
- Smoky Variation: Swap out the silver tequila for mezcal for a smoky version of the Spicy Margarita.
- Batch Preparation: For a party, multiply the recipe by the number of servings you need. Mix everything except the ice and store it in the refrigerator. When ready to serve, shake with ice and strain into glasses.
- Mocktail Option: For a non-alcoholic version, replace the tequila with sparkling water or a citrus-flavored soda, and keep the jalapeños for that spicy kick.
